Evaluation Question Three

Evaluation Question Three

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our film “Granted” is a very low budget film and due to this reason it would not make it to be a blockbuster film and be viewed by mainstream audiences. However there are independent film distributors that would consider distributing our film. Our film may be low budget but it can still be successful (cult status) amongst a small scale of an audience, as it has very low chances of it being distributed worldwide.

An independent film distributor such as “Guerilla Films” would consider distributing our film. Guerilla Films was founded by David Nicholas Wilkinson, an independent film maker himself. He started off distributing his own films and then family and friends. Our film would definitely be considered by this distributor as they are “We are constantly looking to take on more British and Irish films”. Also Guerilla Films encourage independent film makers to distribute their films as; “We have raised production and finishing funds, from private investors, for low budget British pictures in the past, and this is something we intend doing more of in the future” (quoted from the Guerilla Films website) They distribute films through screening in large UK chains such as UGC, Cineworld, Odeon, UCI and Vue, also including some independent cinemas. They also distribute through selling DVD’s in Blockbuster, Virgin, HMV, W H Smith stores. Guerilla Films are also the first distribution company to sell films on the internet. They have many licenses to TV companies such as BBC, Sky, Channel 4, Fox FX and Carlton Cinema.

Another independent film distributor “Dogwoof” would also consider distributing our film. As Dogwoof is a social enterprise, it focuses on social aims as well as financial ones. “Dogwoof believes that a good film can make a big difference in how people see the world and social issues” as this is the companies belief, we can see that this ethical company would see many social issues within our film such as gang crime and youth culture and would be interested to distribute our film. They distribute films in independent and world cinemas, DVD, TV, Mobile and Online.

Another distribution method is the World Wide Web also known as the internet. An excellent site for our film distribution would be “YouTube”. This site allows you to upload and share videos online and is the second most visited site in the world. This method would be a great way of distributing our film as watching videos on YouTube is free of charge, and there for it will be great for our film’s promotion. It is easy to access YouTube from any mobile internet device such as the iphone, Blackberry and Ipod Touch. There is also an automatic record of how many people have viewed the film and there is the option for people to comment and rate it. YouTube also allows users to change the language of the site and this enables our vast majority of our target audience to enjoy and fully understand our film. All types of films can be uploaded to YouTube, from home made clips, to main stream films to independent films. This is also a very cheap and easy way of distributing our product to a very large audience.
